Facial Implants

Cosmetic Surgery

First Glance Aesthetic Clinic ~ Woman with nice complexion

When we look in the mirror we often tend to focus on our imperfections. Many people feel their faces are out of balance and wish to have changes made to achieve facial balance or facial harmony. Facial reshaping of the bony contours allows you to enhance or reduce areas of your face with surgeries providing safe and dramatic results that can address your concerns about facial harmony. The surgeries discussed here are often done in combination with other procedures such as eyelid surgery or a face-lift. If you feel your facial features are understated or not proportionate, then facial-reshaping procedures may be what you need to restore confidence in your appearance.

How are the enhancement procedures performed?

Chin Augmentation is accomplished through an incision made either inside the mouth at the base of the lower gum, or just under the chin in an already preset skin fold. Dr. Lockwood can alter the chin by either attaching a specifically selected implant or by altering and repositioning the bone, thereby increasing the projection.

Cheek Augmentation is performed through incisions made either inside the mouth, on the lower eyelid, or possibly in front of the ear. The implant is inserted and attached to the already present cheekbone, thereby increasing the projection. Jaw Enhancement is achieved by placing implants through incisions inside the mouth on either side of the lower lip.

What if my chin is too big or my cheeks are too full?

Through incisions similar to those used for enhancement, reduction procedures of the chin, cheek and jaw line are all possible. Dr. Lockwood can evaluate you and determine if you need reduction only, or reduction in some places and enhancement in others to achieve facial harmony. A personal consultation with Dr. Lockwood will help determine which techniques might be best for you, depending on your natural structure and desired result.

What will I look and feel like afterward?

Because every individual patient varies in degree of bruising and healing, there is no exact answer. However, we can offer a general outline of expectations:

  • If bruising or swelling appear, it will usually occur within the first few days. Resting with your head elevated and applying cold compress will help to alleviate these conditions.
  • The majority of the swelling is significantly reduced after the first 2-4 weeks and the results will begin to take shape.
  • Vigorous activities should not be performed for 4-6 weeks after surgery. Within the first week, you may resume light activity.
  • Over the surgical site, it is normal to have some skin numbness, which improves with time.
  • Occasionally, special garments are recommended to hold the implants still and help with the swelling for the first few days.

What are the implants made of?

A variety of available materials are considered biocompatible, which means your body will most likely not react to them as foreign objects, but rather will find them compatible. The most frequently used are made of Gortex, a solid, but flexible silicone. These materials are considered safe. During your consultation, Dr. Lockwood will be able to update you on any medical reports regarding these materials.
