What is cellulite?
Cellulite is the abnormal storage of fat in the adipocytes (fat cells) in the hypodermis. The fat cells are grouped together into large collections, which are separated by fibrous strands. These fibrous strands run between the muscle and the skin. As the fat cells expand with weight gain, the gap between muscle and skin expands but unfortunately the fibrous strands cannot stretch. This results in the dimpling characteristic of cellulite.
Who is affected by Cellulite?
Cellulite is mostly a problem in the buttock and thigh area but can affect all areas in some women and men, irrespective young or old, underweight or overweight.
Up until now there has not been any effective way to improve cellulite other than losing weight (and this does not always help). Treatments like body wraps, ultrasound and massage can give temporary relief but do not alter the basic structural problem that causes cellulite.
Accent ® XL
There is now a revolutionary new treatment for cellulite called Accent ® XL , which uses IN-Motion™ technology. This technology represents a breakthrough in patient comfort, speed of procedures and repeatable clinical results. It provides a gradual thermal rise to the target's therapeutic temperature, without the risk of injury and with much less pain for the patient than the older Accent MSQ technology.. The IN-Motion™ technology is administered using a sweeping technique, which enables a larger treatment area for body reshaping. The dual radio frequency modes produce therapeutic heat in two ways:
- Tissue resistance to BiPolar RF current creates local, superficial dermal heating
- UniPolar™ and UniLarge™ RF generates alternating electromagnetic fields that cause rotation and friction in the dipole water molecules of deeper tissue
This gradual heating of the dermal and subdermal tissue in combination with the generation of electromagnetic fields, results in collagen reorganization. The collagen fibers contract and multiply to firm and improve skin laxity. The surrounding connective tissue also contracts to improve the skin's contour, texture and architecture. This causes an improvement in circulation and retained fluids drain from subcutaneous adipose tissue (cellulite) to reduce edema, erythema and overall volume. The fat cells are also broken down and absorbed, metabolism of the area is increased and the end result is a smoother, more regular appearance and general reduction in hip, thigh and stomach size.
What kind of results can be expected?
In a recent pilot study, a 65% reduction in the appearance of cellulite was noted and average hip size was reduced by 3.2cm. after a series of 10 treatments at 1 week intervals. Further medical studies are presently underway and are soon to be published.
Who is a candidate for the treatment?
Patients with the visible appearance of cellulite and with any skin type are suitable. Treatment is not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people fitted with pacemakers, diabetics, or on photosensitizing drugs.
How does Accent ® XL feel?
Accent treatments feel like a warm massage and most patients enjoy the treatment. No special suits or stockings are required during treatment. A gliding lotion is applied prior to treatment.
How soon will I see a difference?
You should notice a visible smoothing effect after three treatments. However results vary between patients.
Accent ® XL for facial skin tightening/fat sculpturing
During this treatment the technician will move the treatment probe in order to warm up skin enough to cause collagen contraction. It has a unipolar probe, which emits a field of radio frequency that can reach the deepest depths of subcutaneous fats. The heat generated in the fat layer bounces back upwards to the skin's collagen layer to bring about contraction and then subsequent replacement by fibroblasts.
The Accent ® XL is therefore able to sculpt fat as well as tighten skin. It also has a bipolar treatment hand-piece that provides more skin tightening.
